It's almost that time again when, after an overly indulgent festive season, we all aspire to become healthier and happier in the New Year by committing to (usually) one of the following goals:
Get fit/lose weight
Save/make more money
Spend more time with family and friends
Donate to/volunteer with a charity
Find a husband or wife / have a child
Discover the answer to World peace!!!
Sadly a majority of people get as far as signing up to the gym or do a few google searches about volunteering before the reality sinks in and the hecticness of real life takes over.
Learning a new language also often features on people's aspiration lists and rightly so as it holistically contributes to a number of the resolutions above anyway...
Choosing to learn a new language is food for the soul and those around you. Communication is everything in this complicated, fast paced world and can make all the different to your business deal, job application or making a connection with that special someone you met recently not to mention avoiding mis-understandings and breaking down cultural barriers which can lead to an endless potential of possibilities and opportunities.
Language naturally forms a vital part of good communication along with tone, gesture, facial expression, patience and a multitude of practical digital communication tools which we are lucky enough to benefit from.
So why not choose to learn a new language for your 2017 New Years resolution! It might not help you lose weight (although the treadmill is a great place to practice your listening skills on your headphones!) but it will most definitely make you a richer person...richer in terms of the opportunities it creates in your life...that job you always wanted, the confidence to book that overseas trip, that feeling of accomplishment from learning something new but most importantly being able to relate to other human beings around you, express yourself and understand others to the fullest contributing to an empathetic approach to the rest of humanity. Who knows what a place the world could become if we all had a little more empathy…..World peace?!! ;)
